OFF TO EXPLORE THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS FOR THREE DAYS-Thursday, Friday, & Saturday
Thursday morning we catch the ferry over to Orcas Island. We decide to take the van instead of Tin Lizzie, leaving her in Anacortes. We are surprised at the number of comments “We love it!”and “What year is it?” that we get about the van.
We check into camp at Midway in Moran State Park. We take a hike to Cascade Waterfall as our first stop.
Next we go to the summit of Mount Constitution. The view is fantastic of the San Juan Islands and all the way to Mount Baker.
Friday we take the ferry over to San Juan Island, and check into our camp site at the County Park. Not quite as private, but a pretty spot right on the beach.
Saturday we continue to enjoy the island by hiking around “English Camp” and “American Camp” and learning the history behind the “Pig War” and how the U.S. obtained the San Juan Islands instead of Britain. We then go out on a Whale Watching Tour from 2:30-5:30. We see a couple Minke Whales surface, but can’t catch them on camera. Lots of seals though and a fun trip.
We get back just in time to catch the 6:30 ferry back to Anacortes. Get in at 7:30, load Tin Lizzie up by 8:00, just before dark. Drive to the motel in Burlington. We need to get up in the morning to head to Vancouver and actually join the group to start the tour of Canada, so stay tuned in for more to come!
